I am not going to format this the same as yesterday. I'll probably just log the picks and comment in between. I lost control when I got calls, emails and text messages. The 1st round moved fast yesterday, which was great. It should be more of the same today. Bill Polian agrees. I have really liked Polian on ESPN since he was fired in Indianapolis.
Two Minute Warning:
The St. Louis Rams are on the clock:
The Rams need most everything, but fortunately for them, they have three of the first 13 picks in the 2nd round (barring trade). Reports are they keep the pick. It could probably be traded for a 1st round pick in next year's draft, but the Rams have enough needs of their own, including WR. I have questions about Stephen Hill. Not sure if the Rams share my skepticism. Mohamed Sanu? Courtney Upshaw is also available, but perhaps not for long. Maybe Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State. The Rams took DT Michael Bockers in the first round. This pick could go in a number of different directions.
Rams select: Brian Quick, WR, Appalachian State
Rams take the WR they need. Do the Colts take Andrew Luck's college TE, Colby Fleener?
Colts select: Colby Fleener, TE, Stanford
Indianapolis is now the Stanford of the Midwest. Pass catching tight end. Dallas Clark is to Peyton Manning as Colby Fleener is to Andrew Luck. No arguments.
The Ravens traded out of the 1st round, so this is their first pick. Peter Konz? Mohamed Sanu? Courtney Upshaw? George Iloka? Lots of options for Baltimore.
Ravens select: Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama
Good player. People have been focusing on too short, short arms, not explosive. Upshaw is a good football player and Baltimore did well to get him in the 2nd round.
The Broncos could use skill players to compliment Peyton Manning. They have a good OL and solid defense. Wonder if they take their top rated WR, Sanu, Hill, or whoever. Kiper suggest a DT, and there are some available. I say a WR for Manning.
Broncos select: Derek Wolfe, DT, Cincinnati
Kiper wins. I don't know the player, so I'll just listen to Kiper rave about him...
47.5 Rating???That grade seems a little low. |
ESPN cuts to Janoris Jenkins, holding baby, sitting next to Nikki Minaj (baby's mama)...Polian is asked if he would draft Jenkins in the 2nd round, he says no. "Jenkins is deep in the box."
Browns select: Mitchell Schwartz, OT, Cal
Moves right in to RT.
Jaguars select: Andre Branch, DE, Clemson
Gruden points out what I thought. One year of production, so not a huge body of work, but a lot of potential.
Rams select: Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama
Crowd growns. Rams also have Courtland Finnegan, who is slightly insane. Things will be interesting in St. Louis (or LA)...
No trades yet this round. Surprising. But I guess the teams drafting are seeing good players available, excellent value, and they want to stay in the slot to make the pick.
Panthers select: Amini Silatolu, OG, Midwestern State
All the analysts love this guy. Played against lower level competition. I am suddenly envisioning Stephen Hill in the AFC East (Buffalo or Miami).
Trade: Jets trade with Seattle to select after Miami.
Bills select: Cordy Glenn, OL, Georgia
Many people projected him to go in the 1st Round. Gruden says he can play LT, a lot of people see him on the right or inside. So I guess he is versatile. Once again, the Bills do a good job drafting.
On the other hand...
Dolphins select: Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford
People think he is weak and question how much he loves football. Don't think he is a LT. I don't see this as a game changer.
Jets traded up, so they see someone they want. I have no idea who that could be. Lamar Miller, George Iloka, George Massey, Insert WR Here, Trumaine Johnson, Brandon Boykin. I really have no idea and to be honest, I am a little worried.
Westley Walker gets a cheer.
J-E-T-S select: Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech
Not what I was expecting. Jets roll the dice. Sal Pal says "Stephen Hill can block". We know he can run. Can he catch?
Chiefs select: Jeff Allen, OG, Illinois
Not familiar. Sounds like a college tackle who moves inside in the NFL. Can pass block, but will he be able to run block inside?
Bears select: Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina
I've always liked Jeffery, but he had as bad a year as anybody in college football last season. Injuries, QB problems, weight issues, poor combine. I'm not going to bet against him figuring it out and becoming a good pro. I trust what I have seen in the past.
Eagles select: Mychal Kendrick, ILB, Cal
I don't know the player. Kiper, Gruden and Polian all like the pick. So this is Plan B since they missed on Kuechly. Eagles fans should like that they called him "blood-thirsty".
Seahawks select: Bobby Wagner, ILB, Utah State
What are the Seahawks doing? Even if the player is good / "tackling machine" couldn't they move back and still get him. Same with 1st round pick, Bruce Irvin.
Patriots are on the clock. Troy Brown probably makes the pick. Trade?
Brown is roundly booed in NY, which makes me feel good.
Patriots select: Tavon Wilson, S, Illinois
Never heard of him. In Belichick we trust.
/still reading...
Does this mean Devin McCourty is going to remain at CB? I'm confused.
Chargers select: Kendall Reyes, DT, UConn
Like what the Chargers have done drafting defensive front seven. Kiper agrees.
Rams select: Isaiah Pead, RB, Cincinnati
Everything I have seen makes me believe he is going to be a very nice pro. Makes me think of Ray Rice.
Packers select: Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan State
Dropped in the draft. I liked what I saw on tv. Thought he was a disruptive force for MSU. Gruden disagrees. Bill Polian used the word "force" twice, so I feel validated. Announcers feel he could have used an extra year in college. I think the Packers may have knocked this one out of the park.
Titans select: Zach Brown, OLB, North Carolina
Very fast. Boom or bust player. I wouldn't take the chance. So you don't think I'm down on all UNC players (just most of them), I liked Marvin Austin and TJ Yates. Also Hakeem Nicks a few years back.
Bengals select: Devon Still, DT, Penn State
I want to like the player, but I'm seeing Glen Dorsey, someone who does not live up to expectations. Guess this is where he should have been drafted based on potential and maybe he'll be a good pro.
Lions need DB's. And to keep their running backs healthy.
Lions select: Ryan Broyles, WR, Oklahoma
I like Broyles, so I'll overlook the fact that the Lions did not address a need. Injured last season, but I think he is going to be a good NFL player. Gruden agrees. Kiper is not as willing to overlook that their defense could not stop anybody.
Falcons turn. This is where I say that they made a terrible trade for Asante Samuel. Eagles found a sucker to dump him on or else he would have been cut.
Mike Adams?
Falcons select: Peter Konz, C/OG, Wisconsin
Right church, wrong pew. Falcons needed to improve OL, so ok.
Steelers select: Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State
Red flags all over this pick, but if anyone can turn Adams into a player, it's the Steelers. Interesting segment by Chris Mortenson on positive tests for marijuana and letter he addressed to teams. I am not a Steelers fan (and very much not an OSU fan), but I'd really like to see this kid figure it out, stop being stupid, and fulfill all the potential.
Steelers also attacked their OL problems in this draft.
Broncos select: Brock Osweiler, QB, Arizona State
Too soon to take a QB that won't play for a few seasons.
Buccaneers select: Lavonte David, OLB, Nebraska
Ball-hawk. Good pick.
Saints select: Oh, yeah, right...
Eagles select: Vinne Curry, DE, Marshall
Wanted to see him fall to NE, but thought the Eagles would take him. D'oh!
Ravens select: Kelechi Osemele, OL, Iowa State
Don't know the player. I do know the Ravens need OL help badly. Kiper and Gruden suggest he moves inside.
Lamar Miller to SF?
49ers select: LaMichael James, RB, Oregon
/goes to ATL comments, copy, paste...Right church, wrong pew. Why not Miller? Maybe they want to turn him into a Darren Sproles type.
Packers trade with Patriots
Packers select: Casey Hayward, CB, Vanderbilt
Fills a need for GB.
Patriots weren't ready to hit the first tee just yet.
Giants select: Ruben Randall, WR, LSU
Some people had him in the first round. Good pick to go with Nicks and Cruz.
Picks I liked in the 2nd Round: Baltimore - Courtney Upshaw, Rams - Janoris Jenkins, Bills - Cordy Glenn, Chargers - Kendall Reyes, Rams - Isiah Pead, Lions - Ryan Broyles, Eagles - Vinny Curry.
Round 3:
Five minutes between picks.
Colts select: Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson
Colts draft another TE. Andrew Luck has his binkys.
Rams select: Trumaine Johnson, CB, Montana
Vikings select: Josh Robinson, CB, UCF
Broncos select: Ronnie Hillman, RB, San Diego State
What is happening to Lamar Miller? I wouldn't mind seeing Mohamed Sanu, Jarius Wright, or Joe Adams on the Patriots.
Texans select: DeVier Posey, WR, Ohio State
I am very disappointed in ESPN's failure to utilize Suzy Kolber tonight, after a stellar performance last night.
Bills select: TJ Graham, WR, NC State
We've gt the Dolphins lurking with two picks in a row to screw up...
Jaguars select: Bryan Anger, P, Cal
Just drafted the team MVP. Seriously, a punter in the 3rd round...
Redskins select: Josh Lebribeus, OG, SMU
Here we go...
Dolphins select: Olivier Vernon, DE, Miami
Huh? Kiper and McShay like him.
Chargers trade with Dolphins.
Chargers select: Brandon Taylor, S, LSU
Nice player. The Chargers have done a nice job in this draft.
Why won't ESPN shut up about Russell Wilson?
Chiefs select: Donald Stephenson, OT, Oklahoma
Seahawks select: Russell Wilson, QB, Wisconsin
Interesting pick. Upside = Doug Flutie. Downside = Pat White. Seahawks might be able to petition a court to be declared temporarily insane. Depending on how things go, the GM can look back at this week as the reason he got fired by Paul Allen.
Texans select: Brandon Brooks, OG, The Other Miami
J-E-T-S select: Demario Davis, OLB, Arkansas State
Heard good things about Davis. Will wait and see what the talking heads say.
The Dolphins are back on the clock...
Dolphins select: Michael Egnew, TE, Missouri
Pass catching TE.
Bears select: Brandon Hardin, S, Oregon State
Cardinals select: Jamell Flemming, CB, Oklahoma
Lamar Miller to Dallas?
Cowboys select: Tyrone Crawford, DE, Boise State
Titans select: Mike Martin, DT, Michigan
Looking ahead to the Patriots, possibilities include: Brandon Boykin, Alameda Ta'amu, top WR on their board, Lamar Miller, another DE/OLB, trade.
Bengals select: Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers
I saw him coming off the board earlier than this. Good pick. Would not have been disappointed if he ended up on the Patriots.
Ravens select: Bernard Pierce, RB, Temple
Boykins or Miller to Detroit?
Lions select: Dwight Bentley, CB, Louisiana-Lafayette
Once again, right church, wrong pew.
Steelers select: Sean Spence, LB, Miami
Browns select: John Hughes, DT, Cincinnati
Eagles Select: Nick Foles, QB, Arizona
Welcome to the draft to the New Orleans Saints!!!
Saints select: Akiem Hicks, DT, Regina
Saints had to leave the country once they finally got to pick.
Patriots select: Jake Bequette, DL, Arkansas
I know Bequette quite well, so I am a little surprised he went this early. Bequette is a non-stop player, works hard and will fit into the rotation well.
Falcons select: Lamar Holmes, OT, Southern Mississippi
Colts select: TY Hilton, WR, Florida International
Bengals select: Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson
Giants select: Jayron Hosley, CB, Virginia Tech
Welcome to the draft Oakland Raiders!!!
Raiders select: Tony Bergstrom, OT, Utah
