NFL Draft: Live Diary

It's been a while.  I logged off this blog at the end of the Super Bowl and haven't been back since.  Yesterday I decided I would stay home and watch the first round of the 2012 Draft.  So why not write while I do it?

I would prefer to watch the NFL Network, mostly for what they don't have - Berman, Kiper and McShay.  However I don't have that channel, so I'd have to do it on the computer.  Still might do that and have ESPN on mute.

I figure the structure will be simple.  Who's on the clock, who I think the pick should be, comments.  Trades will be fun.  Heck, my team could sit around for most of the first round, then trade one or both of their picks (#'s 27 and 31).  Or they could move ahead of Dallas to draft Alabama safety Mark Barron.  Predicting what the Patriots will do on draft day is a waste of everyone's time.

Oh, and definitely throw in some memories from draft years past.

This clip is how long it took for me to be excited about Rob Gronkowski.  It's all great, but if you're lazy, fast-forward to 2:15 and watch from there.

Pick #1
The Indianapolis Colts are on the clock
Pick should be: Andrew Luck

We know the first two picks, so this is the easy part.  Both Luck and Robert Griffin, III are worthy of the #1 pick.  Both are terrific quarterbacks and exceptional people.  There do not appear to be big holes in their game, both are smart, and there are not character concerns.  Both will be good NFL quarterbacks and starters on day one.

One hour to go.  RG3 is talking with Suzy Kolber.  He said what I was thinking:

Me:  "Damn!"
RG3:  "You look good.  I like it."
Did not say: "I just want to kiss you."

I would draft Luck ahead of Griffin, but the Redskins gave up a lot to get an excellent prospect.

Trade Report:  Vikings trade #3 pick to Cleveland.  Cleveland intends to draft Trent Richardson. Vikings get 4th, 5th, and 7th round picks to move down one spot.

Bill Polian approves.

I have no problem with Richardson being drafted at #3.  I would take Morris Claibourne, but perhaps the Vikings get the best of both worlds by moving down (passing on a player they would not have taken anyways) and getting Claibourne at #4.  Or Matt Kalil. Or the Vikings could trade out of the #4 position.

The Browns now and the Redskins a few weeks ago did something I can't argue with when it comes to draft philosophy.  If you know who you want, do what it takes to go up and get him.  Don't hope the player falls to you, or risk another team trading up to draft ahead of you.  Make sure you get your player.

ESPN is showing draftee introductions, the NFL.com feed is showing someone sitting on-camera in what appears to be the Steelers media room.

NFL.com draft coverage: Not off to a good start.
OK, now that NFL.com is back, I can mute Berman and Kiper, and still see Suzy.  Thank you football gods.

Now the NFL Network has three talking heads discussing Trent Richardson and fantasy football.  Really?  You've got to be kidding me.  MUTED.

Pick #1
The Indianapolis Colts are on the clock
Pick should be: Andrew Luck

10 minutes to pick.

Colts pick: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

This pick has been known for months.  Luck will start day one in Indianapolis and probably have an excellent career.

Pick #2
The Washington Redskins are on the clock
Pick should be: RG3

Redskins pick: RG3, QB, Baylor

This is where I will admit that I liked Patrick Peterson the most in last years draft.  Would have taken him ahead of Cam Newton.  Both made the Pro Bowl.  Peterson is very good.  Newton may end up exceeding my expectations as a franchise quarterback.

Pick #3
The Cleveland Browns are on the clock
Pick should be: Trent Richardson

Browns Pick: Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

The Browns got their man.  Gruden, paraphrasing Deion Sanders, " Everytime you tackle him, it's a business decision".

So far nobody has done anything stupid.  Miami Dolphins, I'm looking in your direction.

Pick #4
The Minnesota Vikings are on the clock
Pick should be: Morris Claibourne

Vikings Pick: Matt Kalil, LT, USC

Can't argue about drafting a left tackle.  I agree with Kiper, the pick should have been Claibourne.

Trade:  Jacksonville trades with Tampa Bay to move from #7 to #5.

Pick #5
The Jacksonville Jaguars are on the clock
Pick should be: Justin Blackmon

I like Blackmon and understand the pick, but Claibourne is the best player available.

Jaguars pick: Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

They had to hop St. Louis to get Blackmon.

Pick #6
The St. Louis Rams are on the clock
Pick should be: Morris Claibourne or trade

The Rams signed Courtland Finnegan.  Cowboys trading up for Claibourne.

Trade: Dallas Cowboys are on the clock.

Dallas Cowboys select: Morris Claibourne, CB, LSU.

Great pick.

Pick #7
The Tampa Bay Bucaneers are on the clock
Pick should be: Mark Barron

The Bucs already made a big mistake, passing on Claibourne.  Barron is a good pick, but I have no idea what they were thinking.

Pick #8
The Miami Dolphins are on the clock
Pick should be: PLEASE TAKE TANNEHILL!!!

YES!!!

Miami Dolphins select: Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M

YES!!! Ryan Tannehill gets the unique opportunity to get Mike Sherman fired twice.  Can I call him Ted Ginn III?

Pick #9
The Carolina Panthers are on the clock
Pick should be: Too busy celebrating Dolphins pick

Panthers select: Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College

Good pick.  Read an article that said Carolina sees him as Dan Morgan - hopefully healthier.  That sold me on that Kuechly the pick.

Pick #10
The Buffalo Bills are on the clock
Pick should be: Don't know

Bills select: Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina

Good pick.  Need all the CB's you can get to guard against Brady, Sanchez, Tebow and Tannehill.

Pick #11
The Kansas City Chiefs are on the clock
Pick should be: Fletcher Cox

Roger Goodell shown being primped off-stage.

Chiefs select: Dontari Poe, NT, Memphis

I trust Scott Pioli and Romeo, but this is a risky pick.  Gruden "does not dominate marginal competition".

Pick #12
The Seattle Seahawks are on the clock
Pick should be: David Decastro

Berman teased a trade going into commercial.  Looks like Eagles move up according to the crawl.  The Eagles already unloaded Asante Samuel on Atlanta.  Wonder if they want Michael Bockers or Fletcher Cox.

Trade:  The Eagles are on the clock.

Eagles select: Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State

One of the guys I wanted the Patriots to target, but it became apparent he would not be there.  I like the pick.  Think he will be a good player.

Pick #13
The Arizona Cardinals are on the clock
Pick should be: David Decastro or Riley Reiff

Cardinals need offensive linemen.  Either they think Reiff can be their LT or they take Decastro.  Would not take Michael Floyd, but they just might.

Cardinals select: Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

He's a fine pick, but not the direction I would have gone.

Pick #14
The St. Louis are on the clock
Pick should be: David Decastro or trade

Can't be happy that Floyd was taken at #12.  So go get a really good player or trade back to a position they can still get Kendall Wright.  They have a lot of future picks, so I think Decastro is the guy.

Rams pick: Michael Bockers, DL, LSU

Risky pick.  I'm with Gruden.  They need offensive line help.  And the draft did not fall their way.

Pick #15
The Seattle Seahawks are on the clock
Pick should be: David Decastro

Seahawks select: Bruce Irvin, OLB, West Virginia

This is a surprise.  He's a serious pass rusher and some character questions.  Hope he is a kid that perseveres and gets past those issues.  Could be an excellent sack artist, but I'm not sure this is where he should have been drafted.

Pick #16
The J-E-T-S are on the clock
Pick should be: "We want Ingram!"

Who I want them to pick: Not Ingram, not Dre Kirkpatrick

J-E-T-S select: Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina

I'm happy.  Love the areas of concern: inconsistent effort, stays blocked.  I'm ok with that.

Pick #17
The Cincinnati Bengles are on the clock
Pick should be: Melvin Ingram

Then hope Dre Kirkpatrick is there at #21.

Bengals select: Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama

Agree with Gruden.  They needed a CB and got one.

Pick #18
The San Diego Chargers are on the clock
Pick should be: David Decastro

Chargers could plug Decastro right in for Chris Dielman.  Could also be Ingram.

Chargers select:  Melvin Ingram, DE/OLB, South Carolina

I would have said Ingram or Decastro would be a good pick.  A lot of teams are going to regret letting him slip to #18.

Pick #19
The Chicago Bears are on the clock
Pick should be: David Decastro or Riley Reiff

Their OL is bad.  Two of the best players available fit that need.  So watch them do something else...

Bears select: Shea McClellin, OLB, Boise St.

A lot of mocks had him going to NE, so I'm a little bummed.  Good player.  Good pick.  There is quality at the back of this first round, so I'm hoping the Patriots get two good players.

Pick #20
The Tennessee Titans are on the clock
Pick should be: Not sure, do they need an OL? Or Whitney Mercilus

Titans select:

Trade: Patriots trading with Bengals, reportedly to take Chandler Jones.

Pick #20
The Tennessee Titans are on the clock
Pick should be: Not sure, do they need an OL? Or Whitney Mercilus

Titans select: Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

Not a bad pick, but there is also talent at other positions available.

Pick #21
The New England Patriots are on the clock
Pick should be: We know who it is

Patriots select: Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse

In Belechick we trust.  Needed a pass rusher.  Kept the #31 pick and both 2nds.  Traded #93 in the 3rd round to move up.  I am happy.

Having problems keeping up with calls, texts, email...

Pick #22
The Cleveland Browns are on the clock
Pick should be: Not Brandon Weedon

Browns select: Brandon Weedon

Not sure this is a good pick.

Pick #23
The Detroit Lions are on the clock
Pick should be: Donno

Lions select: Riley Reiff , OL, Iowa

Versatile lineman.  Good pick.

Pick #24
The Pittsburgh Steelers are on the clock
Pick should be: David Decastro

Steelers select:  David Decastro, OG, Stanford - Steal

#25 - Patriots trade up to get Dont'a Hightower, LB, Alabama - I am happy.
#26 - Texans select Whitney Mercilus, DL, Illinois - good pick.
#27 - Bengals select Kevin Zeitler, OG, Wisconsin - don't know much about the player
#28 - Packers select Nick Perry, OLB, USC - Boom or Bust pick.  Was hoping the Patriots would avoid Perry.
#29 - Vikings trade with Ravens to select Harrison Smith, S, Notre Dame.  Not a stretch for a player a lot pf teams like.
#30 - 49ers select AJ Jenkins, WR, Illinois.  This is a surprise.  Don't know the player.
#31 - Bucs trade with Denver to select Doug Martin.
#32 - Giants select David Wilson, RB, Virginia Tech.  Good pick.

Will post some more comments in another post.
