This will be one of the most telling games in a strange NFL season. The Steelers have survived injuries and the suspension of Ben Rapeburger, having only lost to Baltimore and New Orleans. Meanwhile, the Patriots start as many as four rookies on defense, traded Randy Moss, and got thumped by the Cleveland Browns last week. Losing kicker Stephen Gostkowski for the season hurts. I'm a Patriots fan, so last weekend was not enjoyable. I picked the Patriots (+5), because, when all else fails, take the points.
I count 10 teams that could make the Super Bowl (New England, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Tennessee, Indianapolis, NY Jets, NY Giants, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Green Bay).
Two NFC favorites have faltered badly. Dallas lost Tony Romo and (finally) fired their coach, Wade Phillips. Minnesota should fire Brad Childress. Not a big fan of "unnamed players" throwing their coach under the bus. But the Vikings need a new coach, and long term quarterback, who is not named Favre or Jackson.
Do not count out underachieving Minnesota and San Diego. They have talent, and can do damage in spite of their coaching deficiencies. If they happen to get their acts together, they could make playoff runs.
