Was out most of the night playing poker, so I woke up in time to watch the Patriots thump the Eagles. Here are a few things that I know, wish I knew, or wish I did in hindsight.
1. Won $150 playing poker. Wish I left hours earlier when I was up close to $300. I'm usually good at that, but thought I could make more. Ended up giving some of it back.
2. The easiest bet on the board this weekend was Virginia Tech -4.5 at Virginia. I even helped talk a rich guy from overseas into making a very big bet on the game. Final score was 38-0. I did not bet the game, or even include it in my weekly picks. Dumb.
3. I've been saying UNLV is good. Never thought they'd beat #1 North Carolina. On the other hand, I've lost the ability to argue or surprise people by saying they're a good team because now everybody knows.
4. Maybe I should have gone to the game. Oh well.
5. The NBA Lockout appears to be ending, with games beginning on Christmas. The Celtics will play the Knicks. I haven't missed the NBA (and wouldn't if the whole season were cancelled). I've always been a Celtics fan, but notice I don't write a lot about basketball. The teams and games boost the economies and many in the community, so for that reason, I'm glad there will be NBA basketball.
6. Common opinion is that the reduced schedule helps an older team like the Celtics. We all know the "Big 4", but who else makes up the roster? FYI - this isn't what it's going to be.
7. The game I debated the most was Chicago +5 at Oakland. Ended up being a push. Wonder what the line will be for the Colts at Patriots next week. -18 or so?
8. Bob Costas did a halftime commentary on touchdown celebrations. To paraphrase (pretty closely), "hey knuckleheads, is it too much to ask that you confine your stupidity to situations that don't end up directly hurting your team" (roll Steve Johnson and DeShaun Jackson highlights). In my mind, it needs to go one of two ways. Teams need to tell their players to stop getting 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalties when they know they're going to be penalized. The other solution - allow touchdown celebrations that are not direct taunting an opponent.
9. I've not shaved in about a month, so I have a little bit of a beard going. It doesn't look horrible. I have only trimmed it a little, so that it looks fine. But I'm not used to it being as long. In hindsight, maybe I should have shaved.
10. This isn't hindsight, more a thought. I wonder if Peyton Manning should play football again. I am very much not a Colts fan, but that doesn't matter to my opinion. If he could sustain another significant neck injury, or risk diminishing the quality of his life after football, I'd like to see him retire as one of the best ever and not take that chance. My guess is that he and his family understand the situation. I don't know details, but I'm not hearing anything yet that convinces me that he can or should come back.
11. In hindsight, why am I watching the Steelers - Chiefs game? This is horrible (changes channel). I don't like the Cleveland Show (changes channel again). An ESPN documentary on Herschel Walker (puts remote control down).
12. I generally don't think twice about holding the door open for somebody when I have the chance. In hindsight, holding the door open for a prostitute in the middle of the night only led to an unwelcome solicitation.

In hindsight
This is what I didn't say, didn't know, or happened subsequent to my most recent posts.
This is a lazy way to blog.
1. Posting an e-mail chain is also a lazy way to blog.
2. MLB playoff picks were pretty spot-off (link). I liked the SF Giants / Texas Rangers World Series. I'm happy for both teams. SF played well just to get in the playoffs and their pitching was phenomenal. Texas beat the Yankees, who had high priced former Rangers, Mark Teixeira and F***Rod, so that's always a good thing.
3. Brian Wilson is an absolute riot. Search some of his antics and you will laugh. He was on Leno last night. See clip below.
4. I am working on a poker post, playing big pocket pairs, AA, KK, QQ. Not happy with it yet and haven't had time to edit.
5. East Bound and Down, Season 2 ends Sunday. I have a different Weekend Watching post.
6. I wish I spent this NFL season in Vegas. I would have made some serious money on NFL picks. That is what I have aways been best at picking. Not bad at college basketball. Do not use my college football or other picks for anything that involves money. Or try the George Costanza "Opposite Theory". Can't embed like I want, so here is link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKUvKE3bQlY .
George : Excuse me, I couldn't help but notice that you were looking in my direction.
Victoria : Oh, yes I was, you just ordered the same exact lunch as me.
( G takes a deep breath )
George : My name is George. I'm unemployed and I live with my parents.
Victoria : I'm Victoria. Hi.
7. Blake Griffin is averaging 17 pts. 10 reb. per game, but the Clippers are still the Clippers. They won their last game to move to 1-4.
8. John Wall has also had a nice start to his career. The Washington Buzzards are still the Washington Buzzards.
9. I voted at around 1:00pm and there were three other voters in the gymnasium of my local church. I was voter # 296 for the day. I'm lucky to be in and out in minutes. Went with my girlfriend and her family at 7:00pm. It took about a half-hour, so there was a lot of interest in these mid-term elections.
10. I have political viewpoints, but I don't want this blog to be about politics and religion, so I will try to keep those views to myself. It's not that I don't want to offend - I couldn't care less about that. It's just I'd rather not write about those topics.
11. I am still waiting to try the In-N-Out Burger recipe at home.
12. A team doesn't get better on the field by trading or waiving Randy Moss. But sometimes talent is overshadowed by the player being a petulant turd. If that is the case, then, by all means, get rid of the guy.

In hindsight
This is what I didn't say, didn't know, or happened subsequent to my most recent posts.
1. Kissing Suzy Kolber has a lot of funny running jokes, including one about Chad Ochocinco and Bengals coach, Marvin Lewis. The most recent entry is, What Happens When You Call Ocho’s Phone Sex Line? (NSFW)
2. The incident that inspired the name "Kissing Suzy Kolber" is one of the funniest moments in the history of television.
3. The Supreme Court is hearing a case based upon Westboro Baptist Church protests at military funerals. This is an extremely interesting case. I can't move off the view that as despicable as the actions of the protesters are, they are protected by the First Amendment. How does this balance with privacy rights, places and times when protests are regulated, and responsibility for the results of one's speech? Free speech exists, but certain content such as slander and yelling "fire" in a movie theatre will get you in trouble. I am interested in how the court rules.
4. The Ryder Cup was something special. There were some great performances. It was decided on the final singles match, with Graeme McDowell defeating Hunter Mahan to win it for the Europeans.
5. I had never watched Jersey Shore. Stopped for about one minute when I saw it was on the other day. I'm pretty sure that nose picking constitutes foreplay in the Jersey Shore. My curiosity is satisfied. I've seen enough.
6. They say pitching wins championships. I hope so, because my World Series picks (Phillies and Rays) had some serious hitting problems over the course of the season.
7. Apparently, I now take submissions. They will be posted under the heading, "put this in your blog and smoke it". It made me take the time (approx. 2 minutes) to learn how to add pictures and videos.
8. "Four Days In October" was a good documentary. Liked the camcorder footage.
9. It didn't take long to reveal my loyalties are to the New England sports teams. Too much going on not to comment. I will try not to focus too heavily on it. No, I didn't just become a Liverpool fan.
10. Texas and Florida are two of the most overrated college football teams this season. They simply lost too much talent from last year. Betting against them helped redeem my college football picks. Moving the picks from Friday to Thursday, as suggested.
11. Oregon's win over Stanford was a fun college football game to watch. Alabama and Oregon are the two best teams in the country right now, and the national championship match up I would most like to see.
12. Not sure if I can or should keep up the theme of song lyrics as column titles. My guess is that it has been done before (and probably better). I have seen articles centered around movie quotes, but there is no intent to steal unattributed content or ideas.

In hindsight
This is what I didn't say, didn't know, or happened subsequent to my most recent posts.
1. Saturday Night Live was pretty bad last weekend. The highlights for me were Andy Samberg asking Justin Timberlake when he's going to make some new music and JT leaving the set during an "Actor's Studio" type interview. And Katy Perry's breasts in a skit called "Bronx Beat".
2. Five Guys Burgers is pretty good. Good burgers and fries; free peanuts. A little pricey, but good.
3. The Tampa Rays gave away 20,000 free tickets to yesterdays game, and lost 2-0, managing only three hits. I prefer a 1-0 pitching duel over a 10-9 slug fest, but I may be in the minority. Keep in mind, the game took 2 hrs. 21 mins. Not bad.
4. Rachel Alexandra will be bred to follow horse of the year, Curlin, perhaps leading to generations of champion racehorses.
5. Darren McFadden is having a good season for the Oakland Raiders, currently third in the NFL in rushing yards. I am not surprised (Michael Bush is injured) and knew this when I posted. It is secondary to the main point that Peyton Hillis is a pretty good football player. I was shocked when he was only drafted in the 7th round, then buried in Denver. He can run, block, pass catch, all this providing positional value and versatility. He could have a long career, similar to Kevin Turner, Sam Gash, Heath Evans, Le'Ron McClain, Lorenzo Neal and Tony Richardson. Barring injury, these guys stick around the league for a long time and make a difference.
6. Best wishes to Kevin Turner and many ex-athletes like him. Player safety and quality of life after retirement deserve a lot more funding and publicity. Former football player and wrestler, Chris Nowinski, and the Sports Legacy Institute have done a great job "advanc(ing) the study, treatment and prevention of the effects of brain trauma in athletes and other at-risk groups". This merits a post of its own, instead of being buried here.
7. "The Simpsons Already Did It" references an episode of South Park, where Butters comes up with plans to cause trouble, except they were all previously done by The Simpsons. "My retirement grease!" is what Groundskeeper Willy shouts when he realizes Homer and Bart are siphoning grease out of the school cafeteria in an episode called "Lard of the Dance".
8. I have never been all that good at picking college football games. That is evident from the results of last weeks picks. I'm not bad when it comes to picking the NFL, that helped with beer money in college. Also not bad with college and NBA basketball, where I have had the most success in Vegas. I'll continue to pick all the NFL games against the spread. Probably five college football games as well, more than anything just to see how I do. Nobody's paying attention to this anyways, right?
9. The local 9am news had a musical guest today. He was wearing a hat that says, F.T.W. Perhaps he does not intend for it to mean what immediately comes to mind, but rather "for the win" or the biker slogan "forever two wheels".
10. Another suggestion falling under Vegas deals is to ask for comps if you are spending / winning money in a casino. Casinos may rate players, reward points, or give straight comps (meals, rooms, shows, coupons) to players. Ask the dealer or floor manager. What's the worst that can happen, they say no?
